It was announced today that the Bargetto Family of Soquel has been selected by the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau as the “Farmer of the Year - 2010”.  This award is presented annually to the farmer(s) who have contributed beyond their normal farming duties to help the community.  The presentation was made during its 93rd Annual Meeting held Thursday, June 24, 2010 at Driscoll’s Company Ranch in Aromas.  The board of directors felt it was appropriate to honor this family who made significant contributions within Santa Cruz Coun

The 35th annual edition of the Country Crossroads Map is now available. This FREE publication lists farms on the Central Coast that sell directly to the public. The guide shows where to pick Olallieberries, select delicious smoked sausages and find the perfect Christmas tree. The 2010/2011 map gives the location and description of 29 direct sell farms and 10 farmers’ markets in Santa Cruz County and the Central Coast area. The FREE publication is produced annually by the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau.

Earlier this week, over 1,600 mailers were sent out encouraging protest votes regarding the Pajaro Valley Water Management Agency’s proposal to increase its fees.  The mailer appears to have been prepared and paid for by the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau – it was not.  As a result, many calls have been received by the Farm Bureau office over the past 24 hours.  Farm Bureau President John E.

It was announced that Katherine (Katie) Webb of Davenport has been awarded the Jimmie Cox Memorial Scholarship for 2010. She is currently attending UC Davis and will be entering her final year in the fall. A graduate of Santa Cruz High School, Katherine was involved in 4-H and is currently a member of Sigma Alpha Professional Agricultural Sorority as well as completing the Davis Honors Challenge. Katie’s major course of study is Agriculture and Resource Economics. She is preparing for a career in agricultural marketing.
